ACELLUS LEARNING SYSTEM
Acellus offers a comprehensive feedback system that responds to users’
interactions by modifying the curriculum to fit individual needs. It is
this unique feature that makes Acellus a step above other computerized
learning systems. Throughout each student’s session, Acellus keeps a
detailed record of all his or her lesson activities. Based on each
student’s performance, Acellus creates an individualized curriculum,
ensuring that every student understands every concept. Teachers can use
the detailed
Administrative reports, available
in
Acellus for Schools, to monitor
students’ progress and determine a grade for each student based on his/her
progress.
Exams
To effectively measure the progress of the students, each student is
required to complete a Pretest before beginning the course then a
Mid-course and Final Exam. While the Pretest does not count toward the
students’ grade, the Mid-course and Final Exam do. In addition each course
contains Unit and Course Exams that are presented to the student at
appropriate points throughout the course. If a student’s percentage on one
of these exams falls below the minimum required to pass the exam, the
student is put back to the beginning of all lectures covered by the exam.
Lesson Format

Students are presented short video lectures on each topic by national
award-winning
teachers, then presented a series
of
electronic worksheet problems that
give students practice and demonstrate their understanding of mathematical
concepts. Additional tools such as
Hints and Electronic Notes are also available to aid the
students.
After viewing the video, the student is quizzed on a series of
questions relating to the lecture. The student enters his/her answers via
the electronic Answer Entry Module. The lecture notes remain available on
the screen as a reference tool as the student works through the problems.
Students must correctly answer a number of sequential questions in
order to advance to the next topic. With Acellus, the teacher determines
the target number for each student. Because the student is required to
have correct answers successively, if they miss a question, or asks for a
“Hint,” their number of correct answers starts over again until they meet
their goal.
If the student accumulates a number (determined by the teacher)
incorrect answers by either missing the question or requesting Hints,
Acellus automatically presents second lecture on the lesson. This
supplementary lecture presents more details about the concept. Afterwards,
the student is given another opportunity to demonstrate their
understanding of the material by working the problems.
Sticky Problems
When the student answers a question incorrectly, Acellus flags it as
a Sticky Problem. In future lessons, before the student can move forward
to the next lecture they must answer those Sticky Problems from the
previous lecture. This gives students extra practice and helps to cement
their newly gained knowledge.
Curriculum
The following courses are currently available:
-
FUNdamental Math
(English/Spanish versions) -- designed using the NCTM standards for
students of high school and college age who desire to go on to college
but have not acquired the basic skills in fundamental mathematics to be
able to pursue a college program.
-
Algebra I (English/Spanish
versions) - is an 84-Lecture course designed using the NCTM standards
and includes concepts from Algebraic Expressions to the Quadratic
Formula.
The
International Academy of Science is the curriculum
developer for the Acellus Learning System. IAS developed courses for
schools (see
Acellus for Schools curriculum )
and for private use (see
Internet Acellus curriculum).
Additional curriculum is in development. Because Acellus is a system
rather than a program, schools and other institutions can develop their
own courses and deliver it through Acellus. For more information about
developing a course for Acellus, please contact
the Academy.
Delivery
Each Accellus Learning System course is delivered as a complete
software and server package. The server is attached to the school
network and the Internet. Teachers and students access the system
using a web browser. Each server comes with licenses for 25
simultaneous student logons. Additional licenses can be purchased to
a maximum of 50 per server.
In addition, Accellus has a 24 Computer Lab Package. Each
computer and monitor is hardened for rough classroom use including the
ability to lock the computer to the desktop. The package includes a
Wideband 24 port Ethernet switch with 4 gigabit ports to the network.
A network patch panel and pre-terminated network cables are included.
